According to the Surgeon General, when a person smokes near a nonsmoker, the nonsmoker breathes secondhand smoke. When you breathe secondhand smoke, it is like you are smoking. Secondhand smoke is the blend of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar and the smoke breathed out by smokers. Secondhand smoke contains at least 250 chemicals known to be toxic, including more than 50 that can cause cancer.
Whether you are young or old, healthy or sick, secondhand smoke is not safe.
